In the Netherlands, we have lots of rules and regulations, but we’re not always so strict about enforcing them. I notice this a bit because I work a lot with addicts and sometimes with young ex-offenders. We have laws, but we also try to be practical. I think this is a perfect example of that: the whole composition is wonderfully anarchistic, sprayed and pasted over, but we’ve still added a very Dutch rule—no bike parking! Because, of course, a bicycle is very Dutch.
Ironically, this rule makes it easier for graffiti vandals to cover the door in spray paint, which is rather convenient. It just goes to show that sometimes a rule can actually facilitate a bit of anarchy.
