It’s the only youth scene that originated in the Netherlands, specifically in Rotterdam. Hardcore house music and a good amount of drugs fueled long nights of dancing. The Gabber scene: bomber jackets, Aussies, and shaved heads. But despite the tough clothing, it was a kind scene. Kind but intense, and Gabber is something that comes from within. Otherwise, you’re a Zwabber, a Wannabee.
Like most subcultures (Punk, Techno, Hip-hop), Gabber emerged from working-class neighborhoods, the poorer areas. And, as with every subculture, elements get adopted by the mainstream. But then, of course, you’re just a Zwabber. Interestingly, it seems the Gabber culture is now more alive in the provinces than in the city. And Gabber has gone international. Another Dutch export product, so to speak.
