If you type Keller Kraftwerke into Google, you quickly end up on Soundcloud, a platform where musicians upload their music. It turns out to be a location in Aachen where techno is played. “Wir legen auf und organisieren Veranstaltungen im Raum Aachen” (We DJ and organize events in the Aachen area), it says.

The boy on the right isn’t going anywhere. He’s stuck behind bars, staring at us angrily, accusingly. Why do I instinctively feel he’s innocent? Perhaps even a refugee, denied entry? Have I seen this image before, in another context? Are dormant biases surfacing? I’m not sure, but I strongly feel this boy doesn’t belong behind bars. Perhaps it’s because the artist went to such lengths to place the image behind them.
