Berlin has long had the reputation of being a free city. The Weimar period, from 1918 to 1933, is famous for being a safe haven for free thinkers and unconventional spirits. It was a time brimming with art, culture, and nightclubs that stayed open until the early hours, until Hitler turned out the lights.
In the 1970s, the city regained its international reputation, partly thanks to David Bowie, who moved there and wrote beautiful music, including for the film Christiane F.—a coming-of-age story about a young girl who becomes addicted to heroin.
The Kitkatclub opened its doors in 1994, after the fall of the Wall. It’s a liberated fetish club where anything goes… with consent. The club symbolizes the renewed freedom the eastern part of the city found after the Wall came down. This woman with her kitten mask might have nothing to do with the club, but she reminded me of it. Would you dare to go?
