This lady is more than she appears at first glance. You can see it in her hand, holding a heart, and in her third eye—not on her forehead, but in her earring. An eye that looks straight ahead while the woman seems to be gazing off into the distance. It’s as if the eye watches protectively. When you hold someone’s heart, you have power over them. But she doesn’t seem like someone who would abuse that power. Perhaps she is protecting someone’s heart.
There is a lot of faith, but also a lot of spirituality on the island of Curaçao—Winti and Montamentu. I’ve read about it; it seems fluid, ever-changing, with African roots. Of course, I’m no expert, but this woman seems to have something spiritual about her. Or rather, something magical.
