I saw it flying, but on a wall that had nothing to do with the sky. So, I went looking for a blue and white sky and found it on this wall. Is it a gannet? No, those are white. It’s definitely a seabird, gliding on the thermals, and a quick Google search tells me it’s a frigatebird. A bird that feeds on fish and squid, with a wingspan of over two meters. Luckily, there are still plenty of them—though that’s not such good news for the squid.
For me, albatrosses and frigatebirds symbolize freedom, endlessly soaring over the water. On the Moluccas, the frigatebird is said to be a symbol of agility and strength. That’s a lovely compliment for such a remarkable bird.
