A burned house I walked past on my way to a boxing gym. It’s uninhabited and stands on a corner, decaying in an otherwise trendy neighborhood. To me, it’s a kind of Abstract Expressionism, a Rothko or a Pollock, but created by fire, firefighting, and time. Isn’t that just as intense as how those great American painters created their art?
“It is better to burn than to fade away,” wrote Jeff Blackburn. This line later became famous because Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, used it in his suicide note. Of course, this building is neither to blame for nor aware of any of that, but it does offer us some beautiful compositions and adds a rugged element to the street. It’s only a matter of time before the developers arrive.
